TERM LIMITS UNDER ATTACK – AGAIN!Mayor Mayor Hardberger has promised to raise $750,000 to overturn the results of the 2004 term limit election. This November, he wants voters to double council terms to eight years and up to sixteen years for the mayor. This is stunning considering just four short years ago former Mayor Garza raised $325,000 in an attempt to water-down term limits. In 2004, business groups, lobbyist, labor unions, city contractors, out local newspaper and other media elites joined forces in an anti-term-limit campaign. The coalition PAC bought public relations experts, campaign managers, billboards, radio, TV, phone banks, block walkers and mail-outs. But they still could not fool voters. The election failed by a 2 to 1 margin. Clearly stunned by the defeat, former councilman Chip Haas blamed “blue collar people” unable to understand how things work at city hall. We believe citizens, regardless of the collar they wear, know exactly how city hall works. They know a council with strict term limits is far better than tax and spend career politicians running the city again. Our current city council believes the 2004 election failed because it was held in May. Criticizing May as a low-turnout election, they apparently think a November election date will get the job done. However, it was the 2004 city council and their highly paid advisers that picked the May election date. We will need your help to fight back. Please volunteer since a return to career politicians will surely result in higher taxes and spending. Mayor Hardberger will have a $750,000 war chest. But one penny of truth is worth more than a dollar of spin and one volunteer is worth more than ten hired hands. It's time to fight back! |
